At West Georgia Technical College, you can start your journey from close to home through our Associate of Science Degree in General Studies. Led by our dedicated faculty who put the needs of students first, this diverse curriculum is highly affordable, and gives students the ability to plan for the future, receive a well-rounded education, and get the full college experience that will be needed to take on their bachelor’s degree.
Through our General Studies program, students have the unique opportunity to pursue specific occupational and general studies credits in math, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences that can transfer toward a four-year degree, either at the University of West Georgia, or many other colleges in the University System of Georgia. Each student may select from six specialization options to customize their degree toward the bright future of their choosing.
Biology
The Biology specialization provides a sturdy foundation in life-sciences, mathematics, and the lab skills you’ll need to stay ahead in our ever-advancing world. Equipped with critical thinking skills and a nuanced understanding of the laws of nature, graduates may pursue exciting and cutting-edge careers in healthcare, education, forestry and conservation, or natural resource management.
Criminal Justice
Looking to make a difference in the world? Do you value things like justice, honor, integrity, and the rule of law? Look no further than the Criminal Justice specialization at West Georgia Tech to guide you in achieving real social change in the justice system, law enforcement, and criminal behavior fields. Graduates may pursue a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, or seek entry level employment in law enforcement, security and loss prevention, court administration, or public safety.
Economics
Financial literacy is crucial for success, but it doesn’t have to be out of reach. Pursuing our economics specialization will put you in the presence of experienced and educated professionals, giving you the instruction you need to excel in the business world. Equipped with the knowledge of market principles, finance, statistics, and both macro and micro economics, graduates may seek employment in accounting, banking, insurance, or real-estate. They may also pursue a bachelor's degree in business, management, finance, or economics.
Political Science
Are you passionate about the history, development, and operation of political systems? Have you ever considered a life in public service? Our Political Science specialization, offered primarily online, can put you on the fast-track to making a difference in your community. Courses examine public policy, current political issues, and the intersection of cultural and economic factors with local, state, and federal government. Graduates may advance to four-year programs in political science, or seek careers in legal services, state and local government, and journalism. They may also seek a bachelor’s degree to become an educator.
Psychology
The human mind is one of life’s greatest mysteries, but our understanding has come a long way. By focusing on the science of human thought, behavior, and emotion, our Psychology specialization grants practical knowledge of the social sciences, critical thinking, technology, and communication skills. Graduates may seek exciting education opportunities at four-year institutions, or kick-start their career in community outreach, mental health counseling, education, or social services.
Sociology
Are you curious about human social behaviors? Would you like to contribute to a cooperative and prosperous society? Our Sociology Specialization, offered primarily online, examines the groups and social institutions that people form, including religious, political, and business organizations. Graduates may become social workers, court advocates, case managers, or community outreach specialists. They may also pursue a bachelor’s degree in sociology at a four year college or university.
